The standard Subaru Impreza 2.0i, which boasts a nominal 2 liter petrol engine, has never really gotten the fame and recognition that its rally cousin, the WRT enjoys. Because of this, it hasn't really found a market niche of its own. See, the Impreza is priced higher than competing sedans in its class, but also boasts plenty of brawn under the hood, making it one of the most entertaining small cars to drive in Watertown, Syracuse and Adams, NY. People fail to realize that as the WRT is the first thing that comes to mind when people think of a sporty Subaru.
This is why we, at Fuccillo Imports, decided to see what a used Subaru Impreza was worth for on the tracks of Watertown by testing it out.
You have probably seen the hilly side of Watertown; unpaved roads, dirt tracks and unseen obstacles. Not the ideal place to test out a regular sedan, but well, that's what this test is all about.
The Impreza's horizontally opposed engine gives it a distinctive growl when accelerating at RPMs above 2500. This horizontally opposed placement is something common to all Subaru models including the legendary WRT. A good 15 minutes were spent having fun with the RPM meter and accelerating from a stand still position.
You can understand the reservations we had racing a normal 4 door sedan through a track made specifically for rally cars, which is why we decided to keep things lighter at first. We went through the unpaved roads at a speed of around 20miles, and after just 20minutes, heard mechanical clanking within the underbody. Not a good start. Finally, we mustered up the courage to take the Impreza out on the dirt tracks. Surprisingly, the Impreza handled just like its rally cousin would, being able to corner easily through the slippery track. This can be attributed to the AWD power train, which has now become standard for all Subarus. Increasing the speed to 60 also didn't make the Subaru give out any extra lean.
While the Subaru Impreza may lack the turbocharged engine and horsepower of the WRT, it was still able to hold its own on the rally tracks, which comes as a surprise given its economical price. For casual users who would like a hint or sportiness, a used Subaru Impreza would serve adequately. For serious rally enthusiasts, however, we would suggest the WRT model. If you are interested, you can find many used Subaru Impreza models at Fuccillo Imports.
