It's no small feat that the 2016 Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan has become a strong competitive alternative to the traditional competition in its class. The 2016 model has softened the exterior design elements, resulting in a sophisticated, more classic appearance. The overall sense is handsome, refined; the sharp line of chrome still extends from the headlights and down the sides, giving it a touch of the sporty. The Hybrid and Eco models benefit from an exclusive trim that’s designed to enhance aerodynamics and increase fuel economy. With the new timeless styling this gorgeous car will continue to turn heads for a long time.
The 2016 Sonata really stands apart with its lineup, there’s the turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, the available hybrid with up to 44 mpg, or the plug-in hybrid with up to 24 miles of EV range. No fewer than five 4-cylinder engine choices are presented to 2016 Sonata buyers. The base engine is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder putting out 185 horsepower. As the standard motor for the Sonata SE, Sport and Limited models, and along with the 6-speed automatic transmission, it offers satisfying acceleration and very good fuel economy.
If you’d prefer something a little stronger, you can choose the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 and 245 horsepower output. A 1.6-liter turbo puts out less horsepower, 177, but more torque, 195 lb-ft, than the standard 2.4, and is only available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic in the Sonata Eco. The two hybrid models, standard and plug-in, share a 154-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, but use different electric motors.
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata offers a long list of options. One of those is Android Auto, introduced late last year, which allows you to use apps and features on your Google-powered smartphone through a USB connection.
On the inside, all 2016 Hyundai Sonata models get a new 7-inch touch-screen audio system with HD Radio, a 10-speaker Infinity sound system, smart cruise control with stop/start capability, Bluetooth and USB smartphone integration, and Hyundai's Blue Link telecommunications suite and ventilated front seats. These complement features such as air conditioning, power windows with pinch protection, power locks, a driver’s blind-spot mirror, stability and traction control, cloth seats, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and a 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback; limited models get new wood trim while automatic headlights are now standard across the model spectrum.
Exterior modifications include lighter-weight suspension components, new wheels for the Limited trim, automatic emergency braking on models that are equipped with forward-collision warning, automatic high beams, a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof and a cool hands-free trunk release that automatically opens the trunk lid when you stand at the trunk for a few seconds.
The interior is effectively laid out to maximize head, leg, and arm room, extremely comfortable and spacious for both front and rear passengers with ample luggage and gear space in the trunk.
There's a 2016 Sonata to fill just about every midsize-sedan need - the base Sonata SE has you covered if you want a budget-conscious 4-door, while sport sedan drivers will appreciate the Sonata Sport 2.0T. And remember Hyundai offers three different vehicles for the eco-minded: the Sonata Eco, the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid. KBB Expert Ratings give the Sonata an overall rating of 9.1!
