The Mazda 6 was refreshed for 2016 and it continues to be a solidly built, well-executed, and fun-to-drive vehicle that delivers a level of satisfaction well beyond what’s predictable in a family sedan. Even though Mazda astutely kept the updates to a minimum, the Mazda 6 is however somehow even more enjoyable!
The Grand Touring trim gets revised front and rear styling along with new LED headlights that replace the previous xenon headlights. All versions except the base Sport with a manual transmission get a larger 7-inch touchscreen and a Sport mode for the automatic transmission. And every Mazda 6 now has an electronic parking brake and upgraded trim on the dash, center console and armrest. One thing they didn’t change: the beloved six-speed manual transmission.
While various minor modifications made to the body are barely noticeable, it's the interior where this freshening shows best. Starting with upgraded materials, soft-touch surfaces, a redesigned instrument panel and gauges, the new touch screen in the center stack is equipped with voice-command functionality. The audio system has everything happening now: USB, iPod, and auxiliary jacks, Bluetooth connectivity for phones and music players.
The refashioned dash has a slimmer center stack and console bringing the Mazda 6’s cabin more in line with the compact Mazda 3 and the CX-5 crossover, as does the 7-inch, tablet-like color screen mounted high on the dash. The functions on the display can be operated both by touch and by a central control knob that sits smartly on the console next to the new electronic parking brake.
You’ll be astonished with the ample rear legroom for this class, substantial headroom - even for 6 feet and plus - bounteous luggage space, as the ingeniously designed trunk offers 14.8 cubic feet of capacity.
The front-wheel-drive 2016 Mazda 6 is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that creates 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Sport and Touring models can be matched to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission while the Grand Touring comes with the automatic.
The Mazda 6’s steering is extremely solid and combined with the refined suspension and solid chassis, makes it easy to steer accurately in unpredictable urban settings as well as getting into tight parking places. The Mazda 6 is a champion for the real world of stop-and-go traffic, capricious pavement, other drivers and their unexpected moves. The chassis design has managed to create a balance between firm enough for excitement, and suitably accommodating for over-all comfort. This holds true whether the car is on the base 17-inch or the 19-inch tires.
In government crash tests, the Mazda 6 earned the top overall rating of five stars, with four stars for total frontal impact crash protection and five stars for total side impact protection. The Mazda 6 also earned the highest possible rating of "Good" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's moderate overlap and small overlap frontal-offset impact tests, as well as a "Good" score for the side-impact, roof strength and whiplash protection tests.
The overall vibe of the 2016 Mazda 6 is more contemporary and gorgeous than previous iterations and it comes with the added bonus of more joy in driving!
