For its second model year, the 2017 Mazda CX-3 compact crossover stays true to the “compact” nature of its genesis; its gorgeous, fun to drive, truly compact and therefore easy to park and drive around town. The fuel economy is excellent and it has sporty handling for fun behind the wheel and out on the road. The cabin is remarkably hushed for the segment, the front seats are bountiful and supportive for the long hauls and the high quality of interior materials adds a sense of luxury.
Add to that the low price tag and you’ll agree this second year Mazda CX-3 is a winner.
Its light weight and stingy fuel outflow combine to deliver an outstanding 31 mpg (combined). It also comes in an all-wheel drive package that also comes in close to the 30 mpg mark.
There is no lack in state of the art technology, every CX-3 has a 7-inch touchscreen, an infotainment interface, push-button ignition, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, air-conditioning, Bluetooth (phone and audio), a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system (with a CD player, a USB port, an auxiliary audio jack and Aha/ Pandora/ Stitcher internet radio), voice controls, 16-inch wheels, automatic headlights, a rear roof spoiler, and variable intermittent wipers.
The CX-3 relies on its sport-tuned suspension and that light weight structure to maintain Mazda’s unique brand of driving pleasure. The CX-3 is a go-getting runabout with a feisty attitude, offering firm handling, precise and perfectly weighted steering, class-leading power-train handling and a provocative styling. A 146-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed automatic with front-wheel drive provide the spunk; all-wheel drive is an option. The CX-3 briskly accelerates through its 6-speed automatic by itself, or with help from its paddle shifters.
Looking inside, the Mazda CX-3 embodies the best of Mazda's "Kodo" design language. It's lean and flowing forms underlie the sporty, agile style on the inside. The tasteful and sophisticated interior is not found on any comparable SUVs. The dash is tastefully accented with soft touch wrapped elements; the center stack is simple with controls that look sturdy and purposeful. The steering wheel has an overall sleek feel, modern and simple, the instrument panel and dash look minimalist, modern utilitarian.
Even though the CX-3 is in the compact crossover segment, in the cargo area you'll find surprisingly efficient cargo volume in a vehicle with such a small exterior footprint. Since the load floor is flat and the rear seats fold down, you’ll come away with a wholesome 12.4 cubic feet with the rear seat up and an astonishing 44.5 cubic feet with the seat back folded down.
The NHTSA gave the CX-3 a five-star rating for overall safety, which is its highest rating. The IIHS gave the CX-3 a Top Safety Pick+ rating thanks to top "Good" scores and advanced safety features.
