There is so much to like about the 2017 Subaru Legacy, for starters you’ll experience improved interior materials, more cushioning at touch points, an up to date technology panel that offers clear graphics with smartphone-like operation and nice large icons for improved visibility. Supportive seats with firm lumbar support and a noticeably higher driving position make this year’s Subaru the most comfortable of the sedans so far.
Up front, there is plenty of headroom, and the Legacy’s upgraded suspension provides a more comfortable ride than in previous years and in others of the class. Around turns, the Legacy is precise, smooth and easy to drive with an undercurrent of sportiness.
On the outside, the styling is exceptional and offers unparalleled outward visibility, enhancing driver safety. If the area you live in includes severe winter driving, there’s no question the Subaru Legacy is a stand out. The 2017 Subaru Legacy comes with standard all-wheel drive, a trait that differentiates it clearly from its competitors in a segment where it's rare to even be an option. With the Legacy, it's included on both the four and six cylinder available engines and on every trim.
The standard continuously variable transmission also does an excellent job of getting the most out of either engine; this CVT is also programmed to deliver noticeable "shifts" to make it feel more like a traditional transmission. The Legacy’s fuel economy compares favorably to the segment’s best.
Beyond its all-weather distinction, the Legacy stands out with its package of safety features including Reverse Automatic Braking, new for 2017, which is added to the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package. The EyeSight accident avoidance technology is available on all but the base trim.
With excellent outward visibility and effective high-tech safety features that are widely available throughout the lineup, the Legacy has among the top crash test scores for the segment. In government crash testing, the Legacy earned a top five-star rating for overall safety performance, with five stars in the frontal- and side-impact categories. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Legacy received a top score of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, small-overlap frontal offset, side-impact and roof-strength testing. The Legacy's seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. In Edmunds brake testing, a Legacy 2.5i Premium stopped from 60 mph in a short 114 feet, a better-than-average performance for this segment.
